You can absolutely snorkel from shore. But your range will usually stay around the reef in front of that beach. A traditional jukung gives an experienced captain the freedom to choose between several areas according to the conditions.
This page is meant to explain those differences honestly before asking you to book anything.
The Japanese Shipwreck is probably the most famous snorkeling site in Amed. It sits close to our departure area in Banyuning and gives guests something very different from a normal coral-garden snorkel.
Because our jukung service is based very close to the shipwreck, this area is a natural starting point for many of our trips.

Sometimes a turtle is at Lipah. On another day, another captain may find one somewhere else. That uncertainty is part of snorkeling in a living sea.

The captain can choose among several areas and react to what is happening on the coast that day.
Most traditional jukung captains in Amed are local fishermen. The same boat may be used for fishing and for taking guests snorkeling.
If you reserve a morning snorkeling trip, your captain may decide not to go fishing because he has promised to wait for you.
This is why arranging a trip by WhatsApp is completely normal for us. We agree on the date and meeting time, and we ask guests to take that commitment seriously too.
Amed has many local snorkeling and fishing organizations. Each beach also has its own coral formations, shallow reef and safe passages for jukung boats.
A captain who works from his own beach knows where the boat can pass without damaging coral. Bringing a jukung through an unfamiliar shallow reef simply to collect a guest is not something we want to encourage.
There is also a community reason: these are mostly small local businesses. We do not want to sail into another captain's working area and pick up guests directly in front of the place where he is also trying to earn a living.
To be clear about what this does and does not mean: the boat does not collect you from your hotel beach — but a car can bring you all the way to the Banyuning departure point. You are never expected to find your own way there.

You can come by scooter. If you are already staying in the Amed area and do not have transport, ask us on WhatsApp about a local car pickup. The price depends on where in Amed you are staying, so we will quote it directly.
For us, using local departure points is not an inconvenience to hide. It helps protect the reef, respects the knowledge of local captains and keeps a healthier relationship between small boat businesses along the Amed coast.

The standard trip is captain only. If you would like someone in the water with you — useful for first-timers, or for children — a local guide can join for the whole trip.
This is a one-off fee for the boat, not per person. Four people pay IDR 150,000 between them, the same as two.
If you are already in the Amed area and have no transport, we can collect you from your hotel and bring you to Banyuning. The price depends where along the coast you are staying, so we quote it with your hotel name.

The price is the same from every area listed here — Ubud and Nusa Dua pay IDR 800,000 per person alike, even though one drive is longer than the other. Staying somewhere not on this list? Send the hotel name and we will tell you before you commit.
1–4 passengers. The practical choice for a couple or a small group with day bags.
1–6 passengers. More cabin space and more luggage room for a longer drive.
You pay after the trip is finished, not before. There is nothing to transfer to hold your date and no card details to hand over. We take the booking on your word, and you settle it once you are back on land and the day has actually happened.
The captain decides on the morning, not us and not you. If he judges the sea unsafe, we move your trip to another day that suits you — and if no day works, the trip is simply cancelled on safety grounds.
Either way it costs you nothing. You have paid no deposit, so there is nothing to refund and nothing to argue about. We would rather lose the booking than take you out in a sea we do not trust.
Message us on WhatsApp at least one day before departure and that is the end of it — nothing to pay, no penalty. We ask for the day’s notice because a captain who has promised to wait for you has often turned down a fishing morning to do it.
No. Lipah is an area where turtles are often seen, but turtles move freely and may appear elsewhere along the Amed coast. We prefer to be honest rather than guarantee wildlife.
From shore, your practical range is limited to one area. A jukung gives an experienced captain more freedom to choose several spots, react to conditions and use information shared by other captains on the water.
Normally no. Each beach has its own reef layout, safe jukung passages and local boat community. We prefer to depart from the captain's own area to protect coral and respect the small businesses operating from other beaches.

For guests coming from outside Amed, we offer a separate snorkeling day-trip package with private transport. The current offer shown on this page is IDR 800,000 per person with a minimum of 2 people.
Many jukung captains are fishermen. A captain may give up his morning fishing trip to wait for a booked guest, so we ask visitors to respect the agreed meeting time.
Yes. Direct WhatsApp arrangements are normal for us. We agree on the date, meeting time and details directly. In our local way of doing business, keeping the agreement matters as much as the payment.
There are three departures, each about 3 hours on the water. Morning at 09:00 is IDR 300,000 per person. Sunrise at 05:40 and the afternoon trip at 14:00 or 15:00 are IDR 350,000 per person. If you are coming from outside Amed on the day-trip package, your boat time is set around your pickup instead.

The captain judges the sea on the morning itself. If it is not safe we move your trip to another day that suits you, and if no day works we cancel it on safety grounds. Because you pay after the trip and leave no deposit, a cancelled trip costs you nothing.
Children are IDR 200,000 on every departure, sunrise and afternoon included, once your group is three people or more. A booking of two always pays for two people, whether that is two adults or one adult with a child. So two adults and a child on the 09:00 morning trip come to IDR 800,000.
